Botox For Men

It’s probably no surprise that for now, most anti-wrinkle treatment is performed on women. But Botox for men is on the up…

Figures say around 10% of UK patients now opting for the muscle-relaxing treatment are male.

And it’s big in America too, where the number of men having Botox is growing by 10% each year.

Celebrity man-fans include Simon Cowell, who admitted it’s a major part of his beauty regime, and famously rugged chef Gordon Ramsay.

Always keen to coin a catchy phrase, the media have come up with the term ‘Brotox‘ to describe the concept of Botox for men.

Not sure it needs its own special word. We don’t have dude-mal fillers, or man-crodermabrasion (thankfully). But they have a point. Botox treatment is slightly different for men.

If you’re a man thinking about softening your wrinkles, good news! There’s a couple of reasons why Botox makes a particularly suitable treatment for male patients.

First of all, men tend to be bigger frowners than women. So they’re generally more prone to developing deeper frown lines and brow furrows in the first place.

And in the main, men tend to have shorter haircuts. Which means: they’re not as able to hide surgical scars with their hair.

So if a man wants to treat his forehead lines without it being too obvious, minimally invasive non-surgical treatment is the perfect approach.

How Botox for men is different

The main difference is in terms of the volume of Botox needed. Male patients usually need more, for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, the facial musculature of men and women is different. Men tend to have stronger forehead muscles than women, which means more product is needed to subdue the action of the muscles.

Also, male skin is thicker. So when wrinkles develop, they tend to be etched much deeper. Again, this means more product is needed to correct them.

But the other big difference is in the results aimed at.

High-brow vs low brow

The muscles responsible for your frown lines and crows feet also determine the position of your eyebrows. The ones that cause frown lines pull down the inner eyebrows, and the ones that cause crows feet pull down the outer part.

So Botox injections can lift your eyebrows by weakening the downward pull of the muscles (a treatment called the chemical brow lift uses Botox this way).

This lifting effect is great for giving a more youthful appearance to female patients. Aesthetically, the perfect female eyebrows should be gently arched with the highest point 2/3 out from the centre.

But in men, eyebrows are usually lower and straighter. So when injecting Botox for men, care has to be taken not to raise the brows too much.

High eyebrows on a male face can lead to a surprised look – which is great if you want it, but in our experience not many men do!

A practitioner treating a male patient has to find the right balance between using enough product to get results, but not so much as to lift the brows into an unnatural position.

If you’re a man thinking about Botox treatment, the best way to ensure you get a great result is to see a practitioner who has plenty of experience injecting Botox for men. And make sure to ask them if you can see before and after photos of their male patients so you know they can achieve what you’re looking for.
